Our History

Organized on February 6th 1933, the Sunderland Fire Department provides fire suppression, prevention, code enforcement, and fire-rescue services to the community of Sunderland, MA. We respond mutual-aid to adjacent communities throughout the year as well.

The Fire Department is made up of 18-20 on-call Firefighters, First Responders and EMT’s. Sunderland Fire & Rescue is 100% volunteer fire department. We are on-call 24/7/365, any season, any weather...for your safety and peace of mind. With the support of our family, friends and community, our goal is to be there to help. It is truly due to their selfless support that we are able to volunteer doing what we love.

Our experiences span from new rookie firefighters to seasoned veterans! Many of our members have over a decade or more of experience in either on-call/volunteer or career departments. Each member has special skills, training and experience that they bring to the table...and those talents help us work together as a family and a team!

Being an "on-call" fire department means all of us have regular jobs in addition to being on the fire department. Our members need continued training to keep up on the latest standards, trends and requirements of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, OSHA, NFPA and more. This volunteerism is something to be proud of – we go out and assist our fellow neighbor in need when they need help the most.

We appreciate the continued support from the community in our fundraisers. The funds are used to buy equipment for the fire department and to compliment community events sponsored by the Sunderland Volunteer Firemen’s Association.
